Miguel Comín: “Carolina was created to prevent unwanted downloads”

26 de Agosto de 2010

The Alia2 Foundation attended the second edition of Campus Party Mexico, held from 9 to 15 August in the Federal District. According to the BBC, more than 6000 campuseros attended the event.  During his presentations on Friday and Saturday, the Director of the organisation, Miguel Comín, spoke of a frequent problem among Internet users:  that of unwanted downloads, and, more specifically, those relating to child pornography.

“Carolina tracks to check for involuntary downloads of paedophilia material, since this constitutes a double offence: possession and trafficking (as the file is shared)”, said the Director. He went on to say that these files are automatically sent to the program’s database, after which they are immediately forwarded to the Telematic Squad of the Spanish National Police Force, the Spanish Civil Guard and the State security forces and agencies of the different countries participating in this project.

The program is one of the tools the Foundation uses in its work to combat the spread of paedophile material on the web and to protect children online. “In order to perfect these tools we need everyone’s cooperation”, said the Director after presenting the volunteers’ portal: Ciberalia2.org. This portal was created with the aim of enhancing existing tools, seeking to “perform much more effective searches and scans”, as well as to continue developing this kind of application.

On the Saturday and via a Skype teleconference from Spain, Luis Canals, the Foundation’s Program Development Director, presented a workshop on the operation of Carolina.  Attendees were also given the chance to interact in real time with staff at the Foundation in Spain who answered their questions and received their suggestions through different social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook.

This year’s Campus Party, held in the Mexican capital, set a new audience record for a technology event in South America.  The event is a technology festival and is based on the idea that it is better to work as part of a team than to live in isolation. Its slogan is ‘Internet is not a network of computers, Internet is a network of people’. This event was first staged in 1997 and has been hosted in Spain, Colombia, El Salvador and Brazil.

The Alia2 Foundation, with its head offices in Madrid, continues its work to protect children online. Together with this endeavour, the Foundation is currently carrying out awareness-raising campaigns nationwide throughout Spain, while also recruiting volunteers.
